Sometimes you can immediately tell when a song is going to be a hit. That was the case back in March when Ear Candy threw itself a birthday soiree featuring the Emerald City's underground pop princess Lisa Dank. During her set she debuted "Cookies!" a song I knew was destine for radioplay the minute I heard it.
I haven't heard all of Lisa Dank's upcoming debut album, but I'm pretty sure "Cookies!" will be her trademark song. The track brings back memories of the days of jelly bracelts, Care Bears and Rainbow Brite by giving a modern twist to a vintage Madonna sound. Trying to pull of something like this could have been a disastrous experiment but Lisa Dank does Madge proud while singing about her childhood dream of hustling enough cookies to make it to Space Camp. It's tough not to get the song's chorus ("Girl Scout cookies. Hustle. Hustle. Make that money. You've got dough. We've got the cookies. Stay on that grind") stuck in your head, which is the sign of a winning single. The "Space Camp!" shout out at the song's end is pretty sweet too.
Sabzi is a busy dude. The top-notch producer is one-half of Blue Scholars, one-half of Common Market and he's a remixer extraordinaire. For his latest remix he takes on Mackelmore's ode to the local hip-hop scene "The Town." You can download the remix by clicking on the widget below and you can see both Sabzi and Macklemore in person this weekend at Blue Scholars' three-night stand at the Showbox at the Market. Sabzi provides some rather humorous words about the backstory behind his relationship with Mackelmore that are well worth the read below the jump.
If you think the third wave of Seattle hip hop seems so 2009, don't tell that to the hip hop heads that are part of the scene making music today because some of those thirdwavers are hitting it hard in 2010.

Mashups have been quite the rage ever since Dangermouse got a little Jay-Z in his Beatles with the wonderful Grey Album (The White Album mixed with Jay-Z's Black Album) back in 2004. Actually, they were en vogue quite a while before that with artists like Z Trip mixing together artists and genres, but the Grey Album was definitely a landmark for the genre.
Today for Music Monday I recommend listening to another mashup involving the Beatles. This time it's the Beatles and Wu-Tang Clan that are jumbled together and the results are a bit mixed. Check out the mixing of the ODB classic "Got Your Money" with "You Never Give Me Your Money." You can download the entire Wu Tang vs The Beatles album, which is titled Enter the Magical Mystery Chambers, for free by clicking here. And while you're at it, go download the Grey album too. It's free and it's a masterpiece. Also, it's far superior to Enter the Magical Mystery Chambers.
